BaduyPride Episode: Ryuutama

My partner and I talk about Ryuutama, a Natural Fantasy RPG originally written in Japanese and now available in English.

From the Kotodama site:

Ryuutama calls itself a “Natural Fantasy RPG”. It is a fantasy role-playing game set in a western medieval-style setting. The conceit of this setting is that at one point, in everyone’s lives, people get this intense feeling of wanderlust. They put their daily lives on hold and travel the world with new-found companions. They find out more about the world, and at the same time learn about themselves.

A Single Moment on Alan Bahr's Top Ten of 2016

Alan Bahr's Top Ten RPGs of 2016

Woke up today to a truly pleasant surprise! Alan Bahr, the brains behind stuff such as Tiny Frontiers, lead designer for Brian McClellan's The Powder Mage RPG, and (in full disclosure) the upcoming Cold Shadows game I shall be writing for, has released his Top Ten list of RPGs of 2016.

To my surprise, A Single Moment was not only part of the list, but it actually landed on a beautiful spot which I never thought would ever happen in my entire life: it was tied with Ryuutama on the Rank #1 spot.  OMG, that game is an ENnie Award winner!  And here's my little game sitting beside it.

I seriously could not breathe for a few seconds.  Ryuutama remains one of the most endearing and lovely games I've ever had a chance to run for others.  The game is just wonderfully designed with nice callbacks to old traditional Japanese computer role-playing games we love, and so to find my tiny little indie game sitting alongside it on the number one spot was just a miraculous delight to see. Andy Kitkowski knows how much I fanboy over that game.

Thank you, Alan.

To know you have found my game to be as enjoyable and entertaining and deep as other games you love is the source of my happiness today.  Thank you for sharing your appreciation of my work and for letting others know how much you liked my game. It means a lot.  And yes, I hope to release its sequel book soon.

Journey ep08 : Ryuutama

11/24/2015
Journey

Episode Eight
"Dark Cliffs"

Ryuutama

They stand at the mountain top, surrounded by dark cliffs.

The group discover they are at a different world. Unfamiliar to them all. Even the camels are uneasy, huddled together and not wanting to move away.  Party leader, the monkey, turns to Piter, waiting for his instructions.  Aya admits she cannot find where they are on her maps.  Piter wonders why they trusted that Djinn.  Tristan admits they had no choice.   Aya tries to pinpoint where they are and yet despite being well-traveled, she has no idea where they are.

Outside the confines of the cliffs and the mountains, dark clouds are rolling in, like a heavy fog upon them.  They realize they aren't sure what weather this is.  Tristan admits it probably isn't safe to camp here.  Worse, the clouds seem to be so thick they can't see the sun.  Nor tell the time.  "It might be best we find a suitable place to camp until we get our bearings," Tristan admits.

Not too far, they see a spiral staircase.  Clearly not natural. But it does suggest others have been here before.  Aya worries if they can even guide their camels down the mountain.  A shriek suddenly erupts somewhere in the distance, echoing across the mountains.  A rumbling sound then drones overhead, from the eastern side all the way to the west.

"We should go," Tristan tries to state as calmly as possible.

Aya nods.  They make their way towards the spiral staircase, each of them guiding two camels to take the steps carefully.  Aya admits they can't leave the camels here being the cute things they are, and this unforgiving environment.  The camels, however, are so spooked, it takes some time before they start moving.  They see more signs of human craftsmanship as they descend the steps which has one half of the staircase exposed to the side, while the other half is against the mountain.  Piter reminds them all to be careful, given someone clearly made this path.  Every few meters, a metal cage with broken glass and signs of what could have been a lantern.  Further below, the clouds await them.  Aya grins, trying to remind them all to stay focused, "We can do it, guys!"  Piter offers to take lead, telling them that clouds must be like a fog.  Aya starts singing the Foggy Cha Cha to raise their spirits.

They soon chance upon an unexpected sight.  A Ryuuzoh stands along the stairway, but instead of a walking stick in its hands, a mirrored chalice sits.  The chalice is silver with red blood stones.  The group walks past it, bothered by its appearance, and uncomfortable with what it suggests.  They begin to realize they are no longer in the domain of the Ryuujin they are familiar with.  This is the land of the Black Ryuujin!

Thirty minutes further down the staircase, they finally come upon a wasteland.  The rocky terrain makes walking difficult. The cold winds have not ceased.  To their surprise, they find an old friend waiting for them.  Joshua Vane, the Weather Reader, is there and tells them he had fallen here after stepping through a portal in Meowtain.  He likes mountains, but didn't expect to see the group here.  He confirms their suspicions that this is the Southern Continent of Kuro,  When they ask him about heading back to their lands, he informs them of a 3-year journey across the sea to get back by regular ship.  And how there are Piranah storms and that they should find a way instead to search for a Waypoint that can lead them back to Ao, the Northern Continent.   Joshua admits knowing about the Waypoints because his family had created them in the past.

It doesn't take long before the group finds itself stalked by Earth Tigers, vicious massive cats of stone and mud.  The monsters attack them with a relish, and each hit depletes their supply of water as the things seemingly absorb the water they carry like a vampire would draw blood from its prey.

And worse, just as Aya is about to land a perfect blow to defeat one of the Tigers, a dark flash fills the sky and the perfect strike MISSES!   The dark Ryuujin celebrates in the mischief.  Seeing the miss, Piter realizes he needs to help out.  He closes the gap and tries to strike the beast down but misses.  Joshua is yelling at them, wondering what is happening. Tristan admits he does not like this place one bit.  With each Earth Tiger defeated, the tiger explodes into dust and vanishes.

To the least, the things leave a vial on the ground.  Tristan, however, is horrified that there are no remains for him to trap or use in his work.  The sounds of stomping feet begins to erupt, and close in at them.  From the house in the distance, people begin to hurry out and rush to them with chairs, weapons and other things in their hands!  All of them are dressed in dark piecemeal clothing, with mohawks and strange things.  They have come to help in the battle and tell them their "Party leader" rushes to them and asked them to help in exchange for gold.

The group realizes the crowd are all Apes!  Which explains why Party Leader was able to speak with them.  "Where is our gold then? We were promised gold if we try to help?"  Tristan asks if the Party Leader promised "all the gold they have?"  The Ape admits yes.  Party Leader admits they have been paid then, since the group has no gold at all. So that is all the gold they have. The Apes, thankfully, do not hold it against him, and even acknowledge his superior intellect.

*

The group considers getting a room but they realize they have no money to spend to pay for it.  They consider just camping outside instead.  Piter speaks up, asking the Madam Ape if they can stay.  Joshua approaches and talks to the woman, pointing to Aya while he explains something.  The Madam Ape nods and then approaches to Aya and curtsies.  She addresses Aya as the daughter of the Wayfarers and thanks them for it is due to them that business is good for her.  Joshua supposedly had showed her the Wayfarer's seal of office.  They head up the stairs.

Madam Ape identifies them to the whole gathered, calling Aya as the daughter of the Wayfarers.  The Apes stand up, hand on chest, to show their respects.  Aya, being half noble, thanks them properly and bows.  One offers to pay for their food.  Another offers to watch over them during their stay.  Another calls out offering to sharpen their weapons.  More and more offers are made.   Aya smiles, all the while looking at Joshua worried for what he's claimed her to be.  They hurry to the room.

Aya asks Joshua what this Seal of Office is.  Joshua explains she doesn't need to know what that is all about.  Tristan growls they can stop their singsong nonsense.   And they all go to bed to rest and recover.

*

The next morning opens with them feeling a bit more rested.  Tristan wakes up early to gather herbs and look around. The fighters are seemingly gathered around the fireplace, singing of their deeds and accomplishments.  Tristanlooks around and finds Party Leader seated with an eyepatch over one eye, piles of coins and gems all around him.  A pair of cards is in his hands.  The other apes are losing the bets and surrendering more money.  Tristangrabs Party Leader's neck, but one of the warriors grabs Tristan's hand before he can grab Party Leader.  "A bodyguard!??!" Tristan gasps.   To his surprise, the Party Leader is called "The Captain" now by the others.  They learn how he with the assistance of the humans bested one of the Djinn.  The pile of coins and cash are supposedly rewards fairly won.  Tristan does not find any hidden cards tucked him his sleeves or clothes.  Tristan snags the eyepatch off and hands it back to its owner.  Party Leader however expresses through the body guard how he feels unappreciated by the team, especially given his accomplishments are rarely noticed by them.  Tristan announces to everyone that, "The Captain will return the things he won from them.  Since a Captain never steals from his subordinates."  With a motion from the Party Leader, the whole gathering cheers!  As it turns out, Party Leader had bet with them all that he could get Piter to call him "Captain" within an hour. Laughter and cheers spread out.  Tristan admits Party Leader was pretty impressive, and the two head out of the cabin to gather herbs.

Piter turns to see Joshua and Aya still asleep.  He heads down and learns more about the people being indebted to Aya's noble family. Piter gets drawn to the craftsmanship of a chest on the counter, and speaks of how civilized a culture must have created it.  Madame Ape thanks him, since most do not see them and praise them for being civilized.  Most, she explains see them as the slave race they used to be, especially the Neko Kingdoms.  Piter admits he views the world with a higher standard, "That with a fine chest."  They have risen from servitude and being merely meat and playthings for the Neko Kingdom.  "We are now a Pride. It was your Princess' family that first welcomed us and allowed us to serve in every waystation.  Allowed us to reunite our divided families."  They were once separated from family members to serve at the Nekomines and now the males were used as experiments by the Cats' magic, and how the Nekomatas would use them as testing grounds for their stranger incantations.  Piter sees a metal box, and asks if that is specifically to hold coasters.  Madame Ape hands it to him to look at it better.  Piter admits the exquisite craftsmanship is undeniable.  Pressing the side, a cigar comes out.  Piter wishes he could speak to the person who made it.  "A thing of magic, but it eventually runs out," Madame Ape admits.  Piter sees the screws and pops the release, and inside they see the five cigars left,  "You just have to reload it." Madame Ape admits its a magic box that they have to purchase from the Nekomata.  She admits they pay the Nekomatas yearly to re-enchant them.  Piter is starting to think the Nekomatas are conning the Ape people.  She shows another "magic box" the Nekomatas sell them, this time one that creates fire.  Piter explains one merely has to keep the whetstone dry for it to work, then replaced when worn down.  "There's no magic here.  Just..." he stops and wonders why the Nekomatas would do this. He sees more items sold to them, which when worn down, they pay the Nekomatas to re-enchant, which include a collar with a spring-loaded button, a clasp that has a twisting lock, and more.  All items that could be repaired but have been introduced to them as magic.

As he fixes them, the Apes start mumbling how he knows the magics of the Nekos.  But even more interestingly, as Piter studies them, he finds that the Nekos don't seem to even use each item to its full potential. He finds patches and switches that have not been used.  Have they been holding back? Or are those parts even the Nekos don't understand?

*

Joshua wakes up with Aya in the room. He doesn't seem to recognize Aya for a moment, even as Aya tries to tell him they are at Kuro.  She tells him that he convinced everyone that she is the Princess, yet he doesn't seem to recall any of it.  She even shows him the passes to the Library that he gave her before.  Slowly, he begins to recall, but he does seem bewildered to be in Kuro, especially since his family had hired people to protect this place and make safe areas... the same story Aya was told to have done.  She reminds him he came through a door from the sky.  Joshua looks startled to realize he IS in Kuro, and he mutters about needing to call his mother cause he's not supposed to be this far.  He even freaks out upon seeing blood stains on their clothes.

On the cot he was sleeping, a star shaped pendant is left on the pillow.  Aya picks it up and asks him if he dropped it. He asks for it back and when she tells him to calm down, she asks what is the last thing he remembers.  "I was never supposed to lose this... I remember at the mountain, we were-"  *click*  Joshua snaps the pendant on and sits up, looking at Aya with a smile, "Oh, is it morning."  Aya notices the distinct change in his personality, claiming Joshua admitted he is the Wayfarer's son, but no one knows the man has a son, however, and only a daughter.  He claims its a very story and asks her about her nobility as well.  "I'll answer if you answer."

*

Outside, Tristan finds more roots and less herbs to collect.  Other Apes are studying a map.  He walks up to them with Party Leader, and after deftly parrying greetings to the "Captain," he takes a look of the map.  The map turns out to be a pop-up book showing the island of Kuro and how it changes with the season.  Kuro, it turns out, is a floating island.  "When does it get closest to Ao?"  He learns that the next time Kuro would be closest to Ao again would be three years from now.  When Tristan asks about getting an airship, how fast will it take to travel to it?  The Apes however are confused with the question, as they never traveled such distances before.  He learns the technology of Airships is something the Nekos keep to themselves.  Sqwaking birds above alert them to a coming Neko. The Apes hurry to the cabins and warn that one of the Nekos is coming.  Tristan admits he's curious to meet one, but the Apes warn him to never look up into its eyes.

*

Aya admits to Joshua that she was a noble of Artenia. The Prince of Artenia was impressed with her actions that she was given a noble title for her feats.  She asks Joshua about the Wayfarers and Joshua admits he is the one of the Wayfarers and his parents thought he was a woman all the way til his third year of birth. By then, they realized he wasn't but everyone else in the Kingdom knew he was by then.  They decided to keep the facade and he realizes he wanted to be free to travel.  Aya admits she is the Imperial Lady of Song.

He asks about her statement about him falling through a door in the sky, and she tells him about their encounter at Darkheart Evil Meowtain, and how afterwards, they encountered him again when they arrived here at Kuro.  He mumbles about "it" still happening, which she learns that his mother always warned him of having fleeting memories, of having days where he does not remember things

She noticed that he seems to recover the lost memories the moment he wears the pendant.  He insists it is merely a family heirloom.  They hear the applause from down people as the Apes cheer on Piter for understanding the magics of the Neko. There is some concern of what would happen if the Neko were to hear of this - and that's when the door slams open and one of the Apes with Tristan earlier warns them the Neko are coming!

They arrive in massive armored forms. They walk almost comically, as the suits hinder their mobility, moving like wide armored forms that walk without knees.  The carriage towers over them, almost three stories tall. Piter is greatly impressed by their arrival. The Apes begin to celebrate the arrival of the Nekos. Tristan doesn't like the fruity grog, finding it strange.  Tristan reminds him to stop complaining though since it was given for free. Piter reminds the apes that they will help despite everything that has happened.  Aya admits their friendship is why she stays with them despite everything else that has happened.  She sees the approaching parade of Nekos, and even Joshua feels he should remember more about these Nekos.  The Ring on his finger pulses, and Aya notices it too.  Joshua mumbles a story about how his mother used to tell him if the Ring ever glowed, they should run.  Aya wonders if they should, but worries about their things as they have not packed up yet to leave.

The music has gone silent.  The Apes wait in silence.  The lights focus on the doorway, announcing the Nekos arrival.  Joshua and Aya see the scene from above, and wait by the door upstairs.  A thin fog crawls into the chamber, ankle high, filling the place.  Stepping into view, a figure stoops to walk inside.  Straightening, towering almost nine feet tall, a pure white figure yet almost neckless, with a silhouette reminiscent of a nun's habit.  The figure looks like a cat, yet the head reminds them of a skull.  Joshua mutters, "Nekos..."  The designs on the clothing would have been white against white, almost Egyptian in inspiration.  Gold trimmings enhance the overall look.  Tristan and Piter stay close to each other.  The head descends, and the figure is now only around five feet tall.  There are scented oils trailing in the air as the figure changes in height.  It turns to look at the two, its movements so perfect that Piter begins to suspect the suit is more technological than organic.  Tiny red dots mark the figure's eyes.  Cats eyes.

Tristan bows his head, showing respect.  Piter studies the thing from an Artisan's perspective while Tristan boldly greets the new arrival.  The thing does not reply.  Piter confirms the suit is a container. A highly enhanced container, to allow mobility and function. "It's a suit," Piter whispers to himself, then louder. "Similar to the cigar box!"  Tristan asks the thing to step out, as it would be rude to talk while inside a suit.  He tries to act confident and brave, but Aya definitely wishes they were still in some nicer place.  Piter notices a familiar button and walks up to the thing to reach for the switch he saw and push it.  But in response, something extends from the Nekos hand, a segmented metal thing wreathed in electricity - it wards Piter to step back.  "So they may not be that tall, after all," Piter muses. "You're not putting that down, are you?"  The thing responds with a whipping motion at Piter! Piter fails to dodge out of the way, and the shock strikes him! Piter's clothes start to ignite!  As he pats them off, he draws his polearm as he realizes the thing is not here to talk. Tristan raises his hand to begin casting a spell!

Aya sees a pair of glowing eyes from the window looking at her and Joshua from the outside!  She grabs him and they rush out the door, into the main area where the Apes and the others are.   Joshua sees Tristan casting and yells out a "No," as he reaches to cup Tristan's mouth closed.  "Don't show them..." he yells but he arrives too late.  Tristan casts Shooting Star and the energy flings the Neko out the door, the whip flailing as it flies.  The walls catch fire.  The Apes begin to howl. With Tristan's hand still outstretched, the Apes stare at him in fear.  "Don't show them you have magic..." Joshua gasps.  But it is too late.  The Apes stare at Tristan. Their eyes turn red in response to witnessing the magic.  Aya tells at them to run back upstairs!  The Apes turn to face Tristan, muttering, "Science" as they move with much more threatening moves.  Piter is confused at their sudden hostility.  They back up towards the stairs, staying defensive.   Joshua explains that the Apes were slaves under those who used magic, the Djinn.  All the Apes begin to draw weapons, and those without weapons draw chairs, or anything they can use as weapons.  The Neko at the doorway, sparks flying from it, points at Tristan and mutters, "Djinnborn."  The Apes begin to close in.

Aya screams, "The camels are packed!  Let's go!"  She sees a vase with water, and picks it up as she flings it at Tristan.  Piter lunges forward, while the Apes are distracted by Tristan, and stabs his polearm at the fallen Neko.  The weapon hits close to the switch he saw earlier!  With the vase in Tristan's hand, he uses another spell, one that creates a Rosefever Pollen cloud in front of him.  The petals scatter. Joshua begins to pull Tristan up with him.  "We have to get out, now that they know you are one of the Djinnborn!"  The Apes that leap at Tristan are forced to lunge through the cloud. Of the four that strike, only two are able to hit Tristan with their makeshift weapons.  The Apes tumble to the ground, the Rosefever swirling around them.  Joshua tells Tristan to go upstairs, as their violent natures are only because of him.

The window shatters upstairs.  Aya sees another Neko at the broken portal, and she draws her rapier as quickly as possible.  She howls how much she hates this place as the Neko draws its own claws.  Piter hits the switch he saw earlier, and it opens the Neko's suit, revealing an almost hairless looking cat inside the suit.  The thing is making hacking sounds as it emerges.  The whole suit folds into some kind of backpack on the cat!  Joshua tries to buy the others time by blocking the Apes.  Remembering the chandelier earlier, Tristan wonders if he can leap at it and jump out but he remembers the people here are all Apes. They are bound to out-jump him!  Joshua stabs the closest Ape that nearly grabs hold of Tristan, and the knife cleaves into the thing's face!  The whole group reels in shock at the violence of the combat.  This... place seems to celebrate viciousness and death.

Tristan grabs his crossbow in the room, taking time to load it.  Aya stares at the other Neko by the window and hopes her quickness and weapon grace helps her swing.  The blade is easily parried by the Neko, but its talons are parried as well.  Piter closes in, grabbing the downed Neko, and he sees the old scars all over the cat's face.  It hisses in anger, "Djinnborn!  This is our lands now!"  Piter counters that it does not give them the right to lie to the apes.  "This is your Neko?" The Apes turn to him, with their red glowing eyes.  The Neko held by Piter (from the back of its neck) tells the Apes that those who return the heads of the Djinnborn will be given freedom.  Tristan trains the crossbow at the Neko Aya is fighting.  The bolt flies... but then, somewhere, a woman laughs.  The bolt suddenly bounces off the armor and strikes Aya instead!  Aya shrieks in pain, wishing their Ryuujin was still with them - realizing the land's own dark Ryuujin might be relishing in their misfortune.  She sees another Ape heading up the stairs.  She decides to throw a stab at using her false title once more.  She yells at the Apes to stop what they are doing, and she reminds them all she is Nobility.  The Neko hisses about never ever being slaves again to the Djinnborn.  The Apes, however, have stopped in response to Aya's words.  Piter pulls the Neko close, asking why they are manipulating the Apes. "Do you think you're better? You are just cats in boxes!"  It responds with failed attempts to claw at Piter, but he drags the Neko behind the bar.  Aya sees Joshua bloodied and injured from the assault of the Apes, and she rushes to him.  The Apes pull back.  Joshua thanks her, and he doesn't seem to recognize her again.  Aya searches the ground for any signs of his special pendant.

Upstairs, the battle continues however.   Tristan raises his hand at the Neko by the window once more and begins to cast another Shooting Star spell.  The Neko panics! As the Shooting Star flies, it strikes the Neko but the wounds it causes are miniscule, the Neko rakes at him in response.  "Now they will all find you."

Piter tells the Neko to open the chest.  He shoves the cat into the chest to "cool off" and shuts it closed.  The Apes, no longer red eyes, are watching now, calmer and quieter.  Aya asks for her crest, telling the others that she had lost her crest.  She asks for a healer.  Another Ape comes close, handing her the chain it had found.  As Aya clasps it around Joshua's neck, Joshua suddenly shifts once more in attitude and nearly attacks the closest Ape!  Aya holds him down, calming him down and telling him things are under control.

Tristan realizes he cannot fight the Neko alone.  He Shooting Star's the door to tear it open.  But the Neko leaps out the window once more to escape.  Tristan stumbles out the door to see the battle outside has stopped.

*

An hour had passed.  The Apes have left, most undecided on what had happened.  Most don't seem to even recall the reasons they leapt into battle.  Or that there was a battle.  They are stunned at the realization many of them are suddenly injured.  And one of them is dead.   The Ape go through some ritual with the dead one, each speaking how they fought alongside the ape when they faced different things.   The sadness is palpable.  Piter sits on the chest, keeping the Neko trapped inside.  Joshua hates he cannot recall things clearly, and is wondering who killed the Ape.  Tristan tends to his wounds.  Though he witnessed Joshua killing the Ape, he does not admit or state it.  Madame Ape and the bartender stare at Aya, but admit it is not their place to speak any ill words towards the Wayfarer.    She asks if they blame them for this.  Madame Ape admits it is not blame... but there is no denying the ill wind the Djinnborn brings with them.  Aya explains she owns the Djinnborn her life.

"Kuro trusts only in the magic of the Nekos," Madame Ape explains, "The Science of the Djinnborn can never be trusted."

Aya explains that just as her father and her people welcome the Apes, they welcome the good Djinnborns.  "There are good Djinnborns."  She catches Joshua looking at her.  They both realizes she is lying and they stay silent.  Piter and Tristan wonder if it was the dark Ryuujin that caused that dagger to kill the Ape.  They ask Aya if the Wayfarer can find elsewhere to sleep.  She accepts they will.   One Ape growls, "At least you can still leave."

*

They gather their things. Joshua wonders if they should go to the next Wayfarer point.  Aya wants to find a place the Nekos cannot go.  But Joshua admits there is no place to do so, as the Nekos rule the land.  Tristan suggests they find instead a way to leave this place.  This land.  "The Nekos know I am here."  Aya wonders if they should stick to the wilderness.  Joshua wonders if they can find an airship or some flying steed.  Piter asks what they should do to their captive.  Aya admits it would help to have a hostage.  All of them hate that feeling.

*

A woman in the mirror smiles. She whispers how they can kill the hostage.  To let go of their concerns and to just do what they should do.   Get rid of the threat.  Be safe.

*

"We will stick to the wilderness. Try to get away from any Neko," Aya sighs.  They talk about how Kuro is a floating island, and they had just missed the chance to leave yesterday when it was closest to the other islands.  They consider finding a Djinn, or one of those doors Joshua took.  Joshua offers to bring them to his family, and though the guards might not recognize him, they might have to have Aya keep up the lie that she's the Wayfarer until they meet the parents.  Decided on their plan, they realize they have to now decide on what to do with the Neko in the box.  With one less camel than before, they can't quite bring the Neko with them and feed him too.

With his polearm drawn, Piter opens the box and they watch in surprise as the Neko comes out gasping for air, beginning to never be placed in a box again.  Unlike other Nekos from their island, this one seems to have been terrified the whole time to be in a box!  Piter asks it for its name, and it replies, "Seven Six One Four One."  Aya gasps that its name is a number!  The Neko admits it has no other name.  Tristan calls it Fluffy instead, which Aya agrees is a better name.  They talk to it, admitting the place seems morose and depressing to the point they seem to act in such a way.  "If you continue to let your past dominate you," Piter explains to the Neko, "You're still slaves."  The Neko admits the only way to free themselves is to make sure they can never happen again.  Piter tells it they have to stop manipulating the Apes, and to stop confusing Magic and Science.   The Neko insists their Magic is well earned, and that they charge the Apes what is fair.  Aya  whispers to the others this is not winning their confidence.  The Neko growls at them, calling them uneducated buffoons.  Piter shoves him back into the box and tells him if he's so educated he can get out on his own.  Tristan tells Piter to let the cat go.  He rather be marred as a Djinnborn than be evil enough to mistreat others.  "We're just reinforcing what they believe."

The Apes prepared something for the Princess.  They give the group water and food rations to take with them.  They hope it will at least sustain them for their journey.  Aya admits she understands.  Piter tips the box over to let the Neko get out.  The Neko, gasping for breath, is weak and unmoving on the floor.  Feeling sorry, Aya decides to toss to the Neko the fishbone earring that she got from Ifa. 76141 stares at the earring and looks shocked.    They are shown out of the Tavern.   Joshua claims to have gotten directions and knows which way to head to... their family.

*

The group heads back into the wind and cold.  With the camels, the group preps to leave.  They notice another camel has gone missing, and the group realizes a dragon must have taken it the other camel once more.

*

76141 hold the fishbone earring up to its eyes.  It stares at it and tears well in its eyes.  "They made it... they made it...."

*

In a dark room.

A fireball explodes.  The fire hovers and grows.  The dark woman stares at the flames.  She shows her long nails and mutters, "We can make a deal." The other dragon stares.  She motions at the glass and the image of four travelers can be seen.  The two dragons stare at each other.  She pulls out a dagger and offers it to the other dragon.

The dragon takes it.

Journey ep07 : Ryuutama

11/24/2015
Journey

Episode Seven
"Desert Prisoners"

Ryuutama

The group begins on a carpet in the sands.  The gathering around them watching intently as the winds blow and the cloths flutter against the desert winds.  The Grand Caliph Marwan watches them nearby and has bowls of water, wine and fruit offered.  A few meters away, a cart stands, and on it is the chained Vizier.  His hands are bound and his mouth is gagged.  The Caliph motions at his guards to sstep aside and let the three come forward.  Tristan motions, showing his intentions and desire to speak.  The Ryuujin notices his attempt and blesses him with a Critical Success.

The three are allowed to explain themselves and share the stories of their journey.  Each story, is told as a flash back of events that have transpired.

Act I: March Through the Desert
A few days ago.
The Prince gave them the task to travel through the desert and bring the Vizier DeVill there to be chained and imprisoned for the rest of his immortal years. When they return, they are to be given the chance to use their flying vehicles to visit anywhere they desire.   The three marched through the desert, going a terrible distance of around 90 km into the heat.  The first day of their journey goes smoothly.  The second day, the Ryuujin takes pity on their struggles against the heat and casts Tale of the Heart to grant them Fumble Points.  Aya sings the Campsite Song to raise their spirits.  Byt hte third day, however, they find themselves once more facing a bunch of Running Eggs!  The sand, rock, palm tree, sand snakes and the vizier himself prove to be useful objects during the battle.  Soon enough, they see the Oasis in the distance and make their way there.

Act II: The Stone Stalker
As they close in, they realize the garden of statues around the oasis are not statues.  They realize that the place is not a decorated area.  Instead, they are the remnants of what seems to have been another caravan!  As they anticipate danger, they note the objects around them: statues, sand, trees, water, and the purple carriage.  A monster emerges, stalking them with its slow yet steady crawl.  With its poisonous bite, anyone bitten by the thing can turn into stone!  The Vizier's eyes widen in terror.  Same with its terrible gaze. Aya ignores the deadly stare and draws her sword to join the battle. Piter adjusts the Vizier's gag to become a blindfold, and he leaps into the battle. They throw the canopy of the cart over the monster to keep its deadly gaze from reaching them.  Piter uses his Seasonal Magic to launch shooting stars at the beast.  But as the battle begins to lean against the adventurer's favor, a fatal bite aimed at Tristan is suddenly protected by a blur of movement out of nowhere.  None of them realize the Ryuujin took the blow to protect the others.  It begins to blink faster and faster until finally it explodes, defeated!   Every statue that was frozen regains their fleshy tone. They defeated the Basilisk!

Act III: The Caliph
As they came to their senses, the Caliph called for the guards to act!  The women covered their eyes as the guards threw ceramic pots!  The gas swirled all around them and the three felt their bodies seize up and pull them into unconsciousness.

Back at the present time.
The Grand Caliph looks at the three and orders the guards to undo their chains.  Even the Vizier's chains are being undone!  Tristan calls out and informs them the man is their prisoner, and that he best not be released or he will enchant them all.    The Prince and the Princess that the three had assisted turn out to be the children of Mundhir.  The man had long been sick and his son and daughter though not of blood, have taken over the Sultanate.  The Vizier was the D'jinn that once served Mundhir himself.  Aya explains it was the D'jinn that tried to manipulate them.

The three adventurers are finally freed of the chains and given water and food.  The Caliph is happy to know the Sultanate still stands and that they have opted to rule without the sacrament of marriage.  The Caliph sadly shares with them that getting back is unlikely to happen as they have arrived at the onset of Rahman, the coming of the Sand Storms, which marks the beginning of a few months of sandstorms.  The Caliph introduces them to Hakam, a giant golden figure which turns out to be his D'jinn.  Hakam is warm-hearted and solitary and almost acts like a child.    It's eyes are red rubies, and its teeth are diamonds.  As he speaks, characters form in mid-air as a word bubble actually appears visibly in the sky.  None of them have learned his language but Hakam understands them and grants their requests.  The Caliph can attempt to send them back, but there's no guarantee where Hakam might send them.  The Caliph even muses that they might unlock the secret language of the D'jinn and be able to communicate with him directly.

The three discuss their options, given there isn't much to sell in this area.  They try talking to Hakam and they learn from a tattooed woman of the Legend of the D'jinn, the Language, and how to control their massive power, some were stripped of the freedom to think (the Gold D'jinn) and others, the freedom to care (those like DeVill). They learn of the First Magus mastered most of the D'Jinn's language and gained control of nine of the thirteen D'jinn in existence. He only failed because of a woman whom he loved so much, she begged him to wish them away. Legends say these two were talking dogs.  Aya remembers the Corgs.  The three also discover that they seem to be missing a lot of water from their supply.  Aya hears a burb from the water barrel and discovers to their horror that Party Leader, the monkey, has been hiding in the barrel all this time!  Even worse, THEY have been drinking the water Party Leader has been swimming in!  As they eat the Basilisk meat, they feel the magic of the flesh heal any wounds from their travel.

When Aya presents the Party Leader to Tristan, they find a massive ruby ring in his mouth!  In the distance, they overhear the Caliph getting angry as they realize he had lost his ring!  Worried that they might be mistaken as thieves, Tristan immediately announces they have it.  As Piter confronts Tristan for Party Leader's actions, these amuse Hakam, who laughs and poof, the ruby ring transmutes into a ruby monkey.   Gifted with sentience, the ruby monkey tries to run off but Aya keeps her hold on it.  The Caliph desires to have his ring back, but Tristan wonders if it would be best that they left immediately.   Tristan explains the D'jinn has the ring.  The Caliph asks if the ring which he uses to control the D'jinn is actually with his D'jinn?  Aya tries to discern D'jinn language to try to ask Hakam to transmute the ring from ruby monkey back into a ring.  Poof.  Party Leader appears in Aya's hands.  But the ruby monkey is still running around.  Piter shakes his head, "This is another problem caused by your Monkey..."

As Aya tries explaining to Hakam needing the ruby monkey, Hakam begins poofing more and more monkeys from gods know where.  At some point, there's even a Gorilla teleported into her hands!  Tristan pulls Party Leader and asks him to call all the other monkeys to his spot.  Piter, to encourage him, "accidentally" drops his axe close to Party Leader's tail.  The Ruby Monkey closes in this time.  Aya feels another poof as an Orangutan appears on her shoulders.  And more and more and more.  Twenty plus different monkeys now surround Aya.  Tristan tries asking Hakam to turn all the monkeys into rings, but only after Party Leader leaves the room.  Hakam laughs and all the monkeys vanish.  Tristan peeks outside and thankfully Party Leader is still there.

Piter approaches the D'jinn and begins scolding it.  He starts telling the giant golden baby that it is time to sleep.  Tristan gets inspired by Piter's actions and tries talking to Hakam like a mother urging her child to go to bed.  Another flash of starlight and the attempt succeeds beyond expectations.  The Ryuujin smiles in the distance.  When Hakam speaks, some of the characters in the word bubble begin to come into focus.  They have unlocked the letter R.

Hakam slides down to sleep.  The tattooed woman is impressed at how they got the D'jinn to rest.  Piter is insistent that they are not going home via D'jinn.  The tattooed woman is preparing their tents for the next three months.  "Luckily you brought a lot of meat."  The three realize she is referring to their pack animals!

Aya returns the Caliph's ruby monkey and explains what happened with Party Leader.  The Caliph teases that she might be lying to keep the ring for himself.  He "wears" the ring on his shoulder and uses the power to send them back.  They gather supplies, worried that he might send them elsewhere.  They ask to be sent to Artienna.

But the Caliph pronounces it as Arentay!

The three get their bearings and discover Hakam sadly has transported them elsewhere.  They stand at a dark mountain side with a curtain of dark clouds.   Aya hopes to see landmarks to identify where they are.  Piter and Tristan see Party Leader staying close, spooked by the new location.  They find a spiral staircase leading down.

*

The Ryuujin stares from the fireplace into the burning flames.  He realizes he cannot find the three.  They are gone from his realm.

"Where have they gone?"

*

Elsewhere, a ripple of water dances.  A woman smiles.  Her reptilian eyes narrow.  "Someone has entered my realm."  The Black Ryuujin smiles, realizing she has new toys.

Journey ep06 : Ryuutama

Journey

Episode Six
"The Wedding"

Ryuutama

The group stand in the vast garden, which is being at the burned down materials.  Fresh flowers are being planted.  Matthew, the old man who Aya had a duel with, watches as the three talk to a noble man whose face is deep with concern.  He asks how fewer chests can be made with the remaining materials that survived the arson.  Matthew insists however there are no such arsonists in the town.  Piter exclaims that the wood couldn't have just spontaneously combusted which  Matthew counters that for all they know, Piter burned them himself! Piter counters that perhaps the guards failed in their duties, especially in chasing the cloaked figure they were supposed to pursue.  Instead of five dozen, Piter admits he is not sure if he can work on anything given his tense and shaking hands.  Aya insists Piter must work in his peak condition, while Tristan whispers to them that they remember they are speaking to a noble man.  Without a choice nor time, the crown prince who once lost his true love insists his sister finds her happiness in marriage - which means everything must be present.  The deal is renewed with Piter tasked to provide one grandiose box using all the remaining materials and be unparalleled in quality and beauty by the end of the week.  Tristan accepts the task.  Aya is given the additional task of entertaining and watching over the princess, despite being mistaken as the group's swordsman (given Matthew's injury from the duel).  She is tasked to be the Princess' secret guardian, having noticed her window has been unlocked in the previous night.  There may be thieves attempting to reach her.  Piter wonders if the thieves were the type to wear cloaks.  The noble man stresses the importance of the chest and asks Piter and Tristan to make it so.   Matthew wonders if there wasn't a fourth member of the group, which Piter bemoans is them thinking about the monkey.  Tristan asks for "Party leader" but the monkey does not respond - he isn't with them.  And that makes them a bit worried.  The four are to be guests in the wedding itself.  The noble man hurries away back to the garden workers, angrily calling out that none of them have added the oak trees he asked for to be added to the garden's layout.

The three talk with Matthew about the fire, and Matthew asks them if they are questioning the security of the town.  Aya defuses the situation and tells him they will fill a formal complaint if necessary - especially after being told a formal complaint requires a handwritten complaint in triplicate, submitted to two different departments.  The three quietly head off, discussing on whether or not they are still going to push through helping make this wedding happen given what they know of the Princess not wanting it to push through.  Tristan asks them if the Crown Prince or the future Princess should have a bigger voice in the matter.  Piter asks him where is his heart for romance?  Aya suggests maybe they can do both: help her but make sure the marriage happens somehow.  Piter confesses he can focus and finish the chest, despite it won't be his best work given the limited time.  They find Jordi in a white coat, a sash around his forehead, and a record book in his hands. And of course, excellently crafted shoes.

Walking up to him, Jordi greets them in an almost somber manner.  Word has spread in the artisan district on a search for craftsmen.  He's become a teacher to fill the need.  Piter muses though those who can't do... teach.  Jordi and Piter begin arguing once more, debating over craftsmanship and teaching.  Jordi proudly proclaims he has twenty students to offer them.  Piter and Tristan however inform him things have changed and they no longer need additional craftsmen and walk away.  Aya wonders if Jordi was pulling their leg, and Piter reminds her to stop with the foot jokes. They realize however that Party Leader is definitely missing.  Aya decides to try to look for him while the two work on the box.

Tristan and Piter asses that almost a third of the materials have been consumed by the fire.  The materials left behind, however, are enough for making a box massive enough to be someone's tiny house.  Piter sits quietly, ignoring Tristan's remarks on the materials, as he "envisions" the box he will eventually craft.    The two argue over the materials, and fail to even notice Jordi arrive.  He informs them he had just quit the Academic pursuits and Piter teases him its only because he cannot provide anymore the artisans they needed before.  Tristan tells Jordi he can help them by finding the monkey instead. Jordi does mention seeing a monkey playing with a few dogs.  Tristan remembers the corgi warriors.

Tristan heads to the stall and hears the laughter and applause from people, punctuated by the sounds of coins being thrown.  Pushing through the crowd, Tristan sees their monkey holding hoops, tossing them for the dog to run and jump through them.  Another corgi is holding a pail and the audience toss him coins to catch.  The monkey splashes a flask of oil on the ring, and the monkey holds out a tinderbox.  People stare as Tristan rushes forward, telling the monkey he cannot ignite the ring aflame without burning himself.  Tristan finds a stick to hold the ring up as Party Leader ignites the oil-wet ring into a ring of fire.  People applaud and cheer as the corgi leaps through unharmed, lands on a roll, then back on all fours with his head raised up.  The cheers resound louder and coins are thrown into the pail.  Tristan thanks the people, and the two corgis soon recognize Tristan and quietly move back into the stall.  Party Leader gives the two corgis a thumbs up and they start diving up the earnings.

Tristan soon learns that Bartholomew and Matthias are happy that the funds they had gathered are enough to pay and recover their men from their goals.  What they have yet to raise is the funding needed for the war.  When Tristan asks for more, he learns that Party Leader is now called the General, and has agreed to help them gain funds and in exchange to assist him as mercenaries when needed.

Piter and Jordi argue over the design, with Jordi wanting to make the box more like a massive shoe.  Piter however refuses to make the design look like a fairy tale shoe house some old woman might live in.  The two refuse to accept the idea of working together.  Jordi eventually admits he took the job at the school because he thought Piter would need him.  He admits he visited the Princess and discovered she doesn't wear shoes. "What manner of sole does not desire to wear shoes!?!" Jordi cannot help but feel people moving around with bare feet are beyond the natural order.  Piter finally proposes they work together in this commission, especially since they have only a week.  Almost like two vicious partners, the two admit they will work together... under duress... to make a masterpiece. They consider making a giant stiletto.  Or a box within a box within a box.  But the ideas don't lock down.  They head to the market to find inspiration.  "There is inspiration in ugly things," they echo.  They struggle to appreciate the market's boxes and shoes despite their terrible quality.  But from all their complaints of these things, they begin to do find inspiration!

Aya searches for party leader with a banana in her hand as she moves through the castle grounds.  Even the portraits and standing armors are replaced with images of the Princess if not of flowers and beautiful flowing things.  She finds herself in a massive chessboard park, and sees man-sized figures of chess pieces that move about by themselves.  "What sorcery is this!?" Aya gasps.  The pieces all fall to the ground in response and a 5'2" man rolls into view.  With a turban like headpiece and a purple feather, the Vizier raises his ringed fingers and pulls on his extended mustache.  He shares he was trying to teach the pieces to dance, and Aya explains she is the wedding singer, despite looking like a swordsman.  Aya admits she gets that a lot.  He identifies himself as Vizier Rout, and shares he has magic over wooden things. He can speak to wood or ask it to do things. His brother, Vizier DeVill is the Royal Vizier, and he is the one pushing for the marriage to happen. He knows Seasonal Magic.  Aya is fascinated that Rout can enchant Wood and wonders if he can help with the task of making a gigantic box. The youngest brother convinced Rout that it is the youngest who always inherits everything.  Aya is confused since she knows its the other way around.  Rout claps his hands and sends the chess pieces, that now shrink back to tiny shapes, running into the box.

Vizier DeVill arrives, in his long purple robes and dark eyes.  He shuts Rout up when Rout excitedly tries to greet his brother and commands him to go to the garden to get those Oak trees into position.  He questions if his brother will ever be useful, and questions if Aya - a wedding singer - would be doing talking to a vizier.  He spits out that he does not trust Minstrels, always having a song for others.  He dislikes them as much as disliking Oracles and admits if he had his choice on the matter, he would inflict her with a Sickness to curse her to do nothing but mope.  Aya backs away, insisting she just wants to find their monkey.  " I have not seen a Monkey around, and even if I did, I would not tell you."  Aya shakes her head and continues going around the castle to look for the monkey.

Aya finds a maid trying to talk to the Princess from behind a door. The Princess seems insistent she does not want to prepare for the wedding.  Aya learns the Princess has had a huge breakfast this morning, and she wonders if it means the Princess is hiding someone in there with her.  She eventually meets with the Princess, learns that he was to be married to the daughter of the Sultanate of Karid, so now she has to marry her own brother to maintain the political union between the two kingdoms. When Aya tries to understand how the wife died, the Princess admits that the Vizier DeVill probably would know.  Aya wonders if she moped a lot, and the Princess admits she did.  Quite often, in fact.  She learns the Vizier has been working for the family longer than they have been born.  And that he might have once been the King of Khalid, before it was changed and the Sultanate was formed.  She even learns that the younger son was always the one who inherits things before, during the time before the Sultanate.

Aya awakens the next morning still in the Princess' room.  She fell asleep talking with her about her brother and her not being siblings by blood. The brother was adopted actually, unlike her. Aya suggests that the easiest way for the Princess to clear things up with her brother is to talk to him.  To make clear what they both want before the marriage happens.   The weight of making decisions for the best of the land are no joke, and personal feelings might not be as important.  Aya however insists that talking would be a huge help.  She also warns her of Vizier DeVill, even if he has been with the family for so many years.

Vizier Rout meets the others.  Aya introduces him to the party, while Tristan introduces them to the Corgs.  When the group finally presents the final box to the Crown Prince, Rout uses his Wood Knocking to have it open magically.   The box has shoes, and the two are also a self-opening chamber. Vizier DeVill however steps into the room, questioning the master of the creation - Piter and Jordi - if this is the insensitive gift they would give her.  He cites the gifts resemblance to the coffin of his late wife.  The others gasp, thinking there's no such resemblance.  But DeVill continues about the wooden box having beauty within it - an affront on the Crown Prince's painful memories. Tristan tries to explain the box honors the late wife, and Piter and Jordi add that it was as if she was present in the wedding.  Aya eyes the group, reminding them non-verbally that they cannot trust that Vizier.  The Crown Prince chooses to see the present as wonderful and thanks the party for its creation.   For a moment, he thought the fire was a message - an omen not to proceed - but now the box convinces him to push through with it.  The reward is being prepared.  Aya looks up at the caged balcony and sees the Princess drawing closed the curtains.  She probably feels betrayed.  They are awarded Ribbons of Khalid which allow them to freely purchase anything in the Sultanate. Jordi wonders if this means he and Piter can even start a joint trade: Shoes in Boxes.

Aya raises her voice, wishing for a chance to say something.  Thinking she wants to sing something, they give her the stage.  But Aya admits she's not here to sing to them.  She tells them she'd gladly trade the Ribbon back for a priceless gift: a private audience with the Crown Prince.  Everyone is shocked.  The Vizier DeVill tries to wave it away and have the wedding begin, but the Crown Prince agrees to have this gift for now.  While the rest are shown to the side with food and wine to keep them occupied, Aya meets with the Crown Prince.

In private, Aya and the Crown Prince talk about the wedding.  He admits he always felt doubt in his heart, but whenever he would speak with his sister he would think she wanted him to do it.  Aya's actions seem to have confirmed for him that the wedding must push through.  Aya realizes she has to tell him the truth now.

Outside, Tristan and Piter notice the Vizier concernedly staring at the chamber where Aya and the Crown Prince have gone to talk.  A servant approaches Piter and asks him if he's noticed that the Vizier has been using magic.  Thorny briars are begging to rise from the ground, especially around the chamber the Prince and Aya are in. The servant hands Piter a tray with five cakes and tells him it will help them, and to use them wisely.  Piter decides to try approaching the Vizier.  Party Leader begins to stuff food in a bag he has with him.  Tristan hear the Corgs bidding him farewell as they have to return to their homeland and are thankful for having fulfilled their debt.  They lament they might never see each other again as war is never kind.  Tristan sees Piter approaching the Vizier with a tray of cakes and decides to follow.  Tristan begins to catch the sound of something in air... a minminmin sound that keeps constantly mumbling in the background.

Piter tries to talk to the Vizier, asking what he does with his staff at night.  He makes it sound as if he's wondering if he would want a box for his staff to keep it during great distances and the like but in truth he's hoping to find a way to separate it from the Vizier.  Piter starts to feel exhausted, as if he had not gotten a good night's sleep.  Tristan casts his own spell, covering the briars with a lush growth of flowers to make them easier to handle.  The Vizier catches sight of Tristan closing in, and decides it is time to act.  Piter pops a cake into his mouth.

Aya confesses in a song that the Princess does not want this marriage, and is not happy to do this but she does not have the heart to tell him. What she really wants is to have a marriage because of love.  The Prince admits he did not want the wedding to happen either!  The wedding is off and Aya cannot believe how easy it will be to resolve this issue. But as they try to step out, they find the doors barred by the thorns.

A battle begins!  Five Objects: Cake Tray, Flowers,  Giant Box, Vizier's Staff, Moonlight.  Tristan open the salvo by casting a spell to unleash a Spring Magic spell known as Kaguya Ray Lance casting it as the moon slightly blinds the Vizier.   Piter then bomps the Vizier on the head with the cake tray. Angrily, the Vizier DeVill strikes back with a spell that induces the May Sickness on Piter! Inside the chamber, Aya and the Prince hear the growing minminmin sound growing stronger.  Aya tells the Prince the Vizier is behind this, but the Prince explains the minminmin is not coming from the Vizier, but the magical creatures bound to them.  These ensured their safety through the decades and are known as the Golden Beetles.  "Those things get hungry!" Both the Prince and Aya begin hacking at the roots with their blades.   True enough, Gold Beetles emerge from the shadows, closing in behind the Vizier.

One of the beetles closes in and begins biting at anything close.  Tristan swats one of them away, after it gives him a tiny bite!  The Vizier growls about how they have disrupted his plans, and to punish them, he begins casting a huge spell calling for the great forces of the desert to protect him.  Tristan casts another Kaguya Ray Lance at the Vizier, injuring him.  Piter munches on another cake, then moves to grab the Vizier's staff. Piter yanks the staff away, and the cicadas begin to fall silent.  In the chamber, the thorns begin to crumble away as well.

Tristan sees the Crown Prince and Aya emerge from the now cleared doorway.  He calls out to him, telling him the Vizier has betrayed him!  Aya charges at the bugs to try to force them back towards the Present Box to trap them.  The Vizier attempts to launch the thorns at Piter, but they miss.  The bugs snap at Aya, but are routed.  Piter lifts the staff up above his head then smashes it to the ground!  A roar is heard in the distance as magically, all Objects can be used again!  The golden bugs start fluttering away as the staff is complete snapped apart.  Vizier DeVill in anger calls out to his brother Rout and declares by the Sultanate of Khalid that he is freed from his bonds.  Rout spins and transmogrifies before their very eyes into a massive figure whose lower body is but floating mist: A Djinn!  The three realize they have to defeat Rout, who has become a twenty foot tall purple magical being.  Aya swings with the flowers swirling around her, striking at the Djinn at the same time as the flowers explode their pollen on his face.  As the Djinn sneezes over and over, Piter smashes the broken staff onto the Vizier's face, finally knocking him out.  The crowd watches as the Djinn fades into mist and is pulled back into a tiny form that they once knew as Rout.

The Prince declares the wedding is off, and instead a treaty is formed to bind the Sultanate and the Kingdom together, instead of the forced marriage that would have been devastating for both sides.  The Prince asks of the three one last task: to deliver the Vizier to the Oasis in the southern desert, and have him imprisoned and chained for the rest of his immortal life. On their return, the Sultanate promises to bring them to any other town they desire to visit.  Piter smiles at the thought of the Box Fair he knows a town will be having.   Aya gives Matthew a nod, but Matthew does not quite grasp what she means.

Jordi watches as the three are celebrated.  He quietly heads out of the gate and walks away.

Journey ep05 : Ryuutama

8/9/2015
Journey

Episode Five
"The Dream Job"

Ryuutama

Aya is talking with Matthew, the head of the Festival, about things to consider in the days to come.  Tristan is wandering around the festival, anxious to learn where they should go next.  Piter, on the other hand is busy working on a jewelry chest, hoping to have something to sell in the festival.

The old man challenges Aya to a duel.  Despite using the tea set, the piano, the open window, the table and even Matthew himself to her advantage, Aya finds herself feeling weaker by the passing second!  As it turns out, the tea had been poisoned by Matthew himself - an act he did out of concern that she might hurt herself.  As she drops, weakened, Matthew tells the old man the matter is settled and he promises to carry her back to the others.

Piter works on the box and starts to notice an echo on the hammering sounds.  He looks around and discovers the monkey mimicking his moves and hammering on the wood as well!  He chases the monkey out of the tent and nearly slams into the noble man waiting outside the door of the tent!  The man reveals he is a messenger from the noble family who are about to celebrate a marriage.  They have heard of his handiwork and are anxious to have him work on the giveaways for the wedding.  Piter watches in amazement as he is given an unbelievable offer: to build five dozen chests by the end of the week to be given off as the giveaways of the couple.

Tristan searches the grounds and discovers that some old friend of his has created a school to teach crafters lessons in the city.  Frustrated, he continues looking around and searches for any good ideas on where to go next.  To his surprise, he notices a dog moving amongst the crowd with an unexpected intelligence.  He follows the dog, a corgi, to a nearby stall and begins to overhear voices behind the stall talking about finding a way to get back their lost lands and raising money by selling their weapons.  When Tristan investigates, he soon discovers the voices are coming from dogs!  The two turn out to be Corgs, dog-critters who have long been at war against the Nekogoblins and now are searching for a way to take back their lost land.  Tristan promises them that he can somehow help but tells them he needs to talk to his friends first.  The two Corgs, Bartholomew and Matthias thank Tristan for the dose of hope.

The three soon regroup, with Matthew excusing himself before Aya awakens.  They hear from Piter the good news, from Tristan the possible job, and from Aya the frustration of having lost a fight.  But what they soon learn from the nobles when Aya tries visiting them is shocking: the Crown Prince seems to have lost his one true love, and is now helping his sister find marriage.  But the Princess herself is not interested in getting married!

And true enough, she makes her intentions better known by attacking the supply of material Piter was to work with in the middle of the night!   And while the others more or less know what this is about, they realize they can't just walk up to the Crown Prince and tell him she wants out.

Just another heart-felt story that the Ryuujin would be keeping an ear trained at.

One Last Journey Pregen Stuff

For those who might want to try running  a similar Ryuutama game as I did, set during the coming end of the world, you can use the pre-generated character sheets I've prepared, as well as the Promise Cards I created for the game here for free.

I created these sheets  with Adobe Illustrator, and a lot of flipping through pages.  Images were of course found online via Google searches.  Maybe someday, I can afford to have actual original art for my sessions.  But for now, these will have to suffice":

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B41mvRogYK7xZ0ZyQWRyVUkwU0E

The files are all PDFs and are intended for personal use and are not intended to infringe on any copyrights.

Some basic guidelines:
1) All players are to understand the world is ending, and as far as they can tell there is no stopping it.  Given this is a Ryuutama game and not the usual fantasy RPG, the objective of the session is not find a way to stop it.  But rather, to make the most of the remaining time in this final adventure.

2) The Promise Cards are intended to help guide the players to finding direction in the story.  Most people, facing the end of the world, might simply break down or end up emotionally shattered.  The players are not playing a game where their characters are in such a state.  Instead, they are playing characters who believe even with the meager time left, there is no reason not to make the most of it.

3) There is no actual set deadline on when the world finally ends.  In our game, I set it to a real timer, so whatever the scene was, when the timer ran out then it was time to announce that the sky had turned black and the world was ending.

This gave the game an interesting feeling of not knowing when it would happen, and of the desire to make the most of every hour they had.

4) The ending is not pre-written nor set in stone.  Instead, it is tailored to what matches the players' narrative.  In my game, the others seemed so determined to embrace life to the point they chose to let monsters live and walk away.  It seemed appropriate for the Black Ryuujin to still get the proper tale, some other kind of sacrifice was in order.  At first, I hinted at some one having to give up on their Promise to allow another to succeed.   Then later tried making it a matter of one sacrificing a peaceful future for the rest to live happily.

But in the end, the group wonderfully embraced the path they took and it seemed apt to go the route that death does not equal the end.

5) Character creation was done for thematic appeal, so yes I did not actually calculate things so each player character spent "the same amount of cash."  But that's cause I don't believe in game balance being necessary for a good game.  Not when players embrace the importance of sharing the responsibility of everyone having fun.

6) Finally, I'm tempted to come up with four sets of Promise Cards.  Each card can be a quick and dirty method for payers to choose an interesting plot thread that they can explore matching a specific Ryuujin.  I was thinking it might prove to be an interesting tool for new players, and a fun challenge for more experienced players.

I don't know, though, if I can legally do this.  Hopefully I get a go signal to do so.

Have fun!

Here are the maps our Mapmaker made for the game.  So lovely!  Thank you Carl!

One Last Journey as the World Dies : Ryuutama

4/3/2016
One Last Journey as the World Dies

Ryuutama

As part of our continuing attempt to share and spread the joy of role-playing games with other people, we have been holding mini-conventions on a monthly basis whenever possible.    For April, the group has opted to run a multi-GM experience using Dungeon World.  Given my promise to always push lesser known games and give them visibility, I opted to run one of the most heart-warming games I've ever played before: Ryuutama.

This game had six players whom have never tried playing Ryuutama before.  To have things run faster, I opted to pre-generate the characters and have them choose.  In addition, I created a few new cards that were intended to help push the narrative forward.  Given this was a one-shot game and not a continuing campaign, I decided it would be best to have this added to the game:

Arthur played Filthy George, a young Merchant whose pack animal, Billy, was one of his closest friends.  He had Dreams of Heroism to meet before the world ended.
Josh played Miki, a young Artisan who was hoping to find The Last Gift for his sweetheart, a moonstone that could allow one to speak to the dead.
Carl played Kit Sune, a fearless Hunter whose curiosity were equaled only by her mastery of her battleaxe.  She wanted to Prove They Exist and felt the Ryuujin were the one and only thing to hunt.
Kim played Ten, a young Healer whose mother was sick and dying.  Given the Unfinished Business, Ten hoped to find the legendary Phoneix Feather - what he believed to be a rare herb.
Jann, who has very kindly been playing in more of my games, portrayed Nikko the Noble who had A Promise Made to make a difference one way or another before all fell apart.
Justine then played Haru, a young Farmer whose Donkey and Dog accompanied her in her journey.  She wanted to solve The Riddle somehow before it all ended.

The world was ending.  Not many knew why or how, only that one day the morning came and the sky was as green as unearthly fire.  Magic began to work less and less, with only the weakest of spells functioning.   Eager to still somehow spend what could be the last days doing something worthwhile, Nikko posted a call for adventurers willing to join him in a journey.  Destination: to be determined.    Answering his call came the young adventurers, with a barefoot woman who called herself Aki asking to join.  Aki's story was one of a noble woman coddled through the years desperate to break out and live a life.

Day 1
The first day began with Clear Skies.  The group traveled through the Grassland and left the town of Last Chance.  Eager to make a sale, Filthy George purchased a generous number of dried meats in hopes to sell it somewhere for a good sum.  The group debate on their choices: North was the Captial City, far West stood the great Mountains, East was the vast Forest with the Hidden Cloister, and finally South was the Port City and the Silver Seas.   With the group deciding to make for the Capital City, the group excitedly allocate their water and rations for the trip.  Nikko takes the Leadership role, while Kit takes the task of being a Mapper.  Miki offers to handle Quarter-Master duties while Filthy George decides to handle Journal-Keeping.  As they travel, Haru makes a few hilarious slips as she tumbles down a few rough patches.  Miki and Kit, on the other hand, failed to get any good sleep the night before. They chance upon their first encounter, a moaning Skeleton that lumbers forward with a club in its hand.  As the group moves to fight it, they quickly discover how their sharp weapons are not as effective as they hoped. Kit embarrassingly double fumbles and falls flat on her face during the fight.   They defeat the Skeleton with some effort and both Miki and George quickly salvage what they can from the remains.  They get a good handful of ivory fragments.  Soon, they come upon a popular camping site along the path: a massive tree towering over a hundred feet up with wide branches and generous resting spaces.   There is even a nice rock pile for a fireplace, and a watering hole for washing things.  They consider between camping for the night or pressing on.  They vote for pressing on, excited at the thought of soft beds to sleep on instead of camping in tents.

Quietly, Kit watches Aki however.  She is suspicious at the supposedly wealthy girl's history and wonders if there are any truths behind the stories of Ryuujin taking interest in adventurers and moving among them.

Night 1
As the group continues to move through the Night, the Grassland starts to feel more treacherous than expected.  Exhausted and hungry, the group soon sees a massive giant further up the path.  Miki offers to handle distracting the giant while the others (yes, including Filthy George's Elephant) sneak past.  She lights up a torch and hurries to the giant, waving at him to notice her.  The giant, busy with chomping on something, does see her but remains unmoving.  Miki decides to start a conversation with him and learns the giant eats rocks and that there haven't been any good rocks to eat lately.   When Miki offers the ivory, the giant seems very happy and offers to give in exchange "all the stuff he found" on his way away from the mountains.  Strong lightning flashes and fire have been striking the sky where the mountains are.  Miki recommends the giant consider heading towards the port city south, and only later realizes she had given the giant directions heading straight for Last Chance!  The others have even noticed insects and smaller animals fleeing to the east.  Bidding the giant farewell, Miki collects the items and finds a sphere of glass that glows, as well as a bag of other junk.  She rejoins the group and they all arrive at the Capital City in one piece.

Deeper in the Night
At Capital City, the group splits up with George, Kimi, Ten and Kit heading for the bustling marketplace that seems to still be open despite the hour, while Nikko and Haru head for the Grand Archive to search for knowledge.  George discovers a Guildsman who offers to trade the meats. When his speech on why they should be purchased enthralls the guildsman, he offers him a choice of three exchanges: a golden carriage with weather-proofed walls and a portable bathtub, a menagerie of well-trained animals (a giraffe, an ostrich, a horse and a dog) all trained for combat, tracking and carrying things, or a rumored rare magical dagger.  The dagger was pitch black and supposedly belonged to one of the Ryuujin.  George's eyes widened in curiosity.

Ten finds himself speaking to an old woman who claims to be a Herbalist.  She senses Ten is new and even offers to let her have one Herb for free from her stash.  With the world ending, she might as well give something of value.  Ten excitedly chooses from the stash and finds himself drawn to the Windcrying Tulip.

Kimi speaks with a pair of twins who are sellers who help him learn to use the Light Orb, which allows him to have the light of a torch despite not having fire.  As he considers selling all the other stuff in his bag, unawares that one of the items inside is the very moon stone he's hoping to find!

And at some alley, Kit sees a bandaged figure motion at her to follow him into a dark alley.  There, he then motions as her to wear a blind-fold and follow inside the gated tunnel.  Further inside, Kit fearless allows the man to lead her into the darkness, given his claims of having answers that she hopes to gain.  Some might mistake her to be slow but in truth, Kit merely had full certainty she can handle anything that might happen.   When the man reveals he is actually a vampire, Kit simply smiles at the chance to be in a fight at last!

At the Archive, Nikko and Haru meet an interesting pair of people.  One is an old wise man whose pet lemur wore spectacles and read what he read.  The other was a young bald boy who was being given stacks upon stacks of books to read.  They talk the old man and discover he is just the servant; the lemur is the master!  Each time they ask a question, the lemur then whispers to the old man its reply which the master shares.  After a lot of philosophical questions on the need for change, the search for answers and the mountain being the best place to search for answers as a heroic group died there supposedly in a failed attempt to stop the end of the world, the lemur offered one last nugget of wisdom before retiring to have his servant scratch his belly for an hour:  Birth shall always look like death from the other side.   Hoping for clearer answers with the boy, the two are interrupted by servants and a noble woman who insist they do not disturb her son.  The boy, they learn, is gifted with perfect memory.  With the world coming to an end, the mother is having her son memorize every single ink of culture the world has written to take with him to the next world.  To Haru's surprise, the mother then reveals she owns one of the fabled Phoenix Feathers in a glass vial.  She plans to have her son take it as the world ends, that he may be reborn in the next one and carry the knowledge of their world to the next.  The Queen even mentions how they have given up the title and made all in the City own whatever they owned.  Instead of riots, the people merely stopped worrying about debts and money and shared what they owned!  It was a paradise unexpected of city folk.   But when her emotions rage upon remembering her husband, the King, who had seemingly run away with some woman in the streets, she hurls the vial to the ground to shatter it!  Haru catches it the first two times she does so, but on the third, Haru fails and with it the feeling of giving it to Ten to cure his mother.

As George chooses the Black Dagger, the guild immediately packs up to leave.  They thank him for choosing to willingly take from them the Kuro-Ryuu's Cursed Dagger and tell him that those who hold it are doomed to sacrifice someone they care for.  When he feels the dagger pulsing, he decides to follow and see where it leads.  Both Kimi and Ten see George running down the street, they chase after him curious to see where he is going.  George finally reaches the same locked alleyway gate which Kit and the bandaged man had gone through, and orders Billy the Elephant to kick it open.  The group rushes inside to see Kit battling savagely against the Vampire, which while it had been injured many times, had been healing its wounds each time it hurt the Hunter.  With a sudden surge of courage, George ends the battle when he rushes forward and uses the Cursed Dagger to absorb every little bit of the Vampire.  The three congratulate him for successfully defeating such a powerful creature!

Thinking it was best to leave, the former queen notices Haru's sadness and asks why she is tearful.  Haru shares her hopes to help Ten, and to her surprise the Queen pulls out a second Phoenix Feather.  While the first was her husband's, she lies and tells them the second is meant for her son.  In truth, she was handing Haru her own vial (and had kept a final third secret for her son).  She wishes them well and Nikko and Haru return to find the others excited with tales of a battle against a terrible monster.   They turn in for the night in soft beds and excitedly consider their next trip.

Day 2
Come morning, the group decides to try heading for the Mountains.  The initial journey was once again filled with Clear Skies as they traveled on the Grasslands.  Unlike yesterday, however, the sky was now a brilliant hue of blue.    The trip is uneventful and unlike the day before, they decide to camp and sleep for the night.

Night 2
It is late in the evening when Nikko awakens, bothered by something.  He looks up and sees no trace of the stars in the sky, and a strange shifting wind that blows Easternly, then Westernly.   Seconds after, the stars return to the sky and the winds are gone.  When Aki emerges from the darkness, asking him what was wrong, Nikko asks her about the world ending and about whether they will find something worthwhile at the end.  Aki admits she does not know, but she feels more brave being with them all.  They go to sleep and rest for the night.

Day 3
The brilliant morning startles them all as the sky has become a vicious shade of red.  The group hurries to move given the growing Strong Wind and the Grassland having shifted to rougher Hills.  The group continues on their trek towards the Mountain, hoping they will arrive in time to try and at least see if they can help in any way.  But terrifyingly, they discover an unexpected twist along the path:  a massive Chasm stretches across the land, with no end on either side.   A rickety rope bridge precariously hangs, ready to allow others across.

All save one.  Billy the Elephant.
The group cries out in sadness when they realize they may have to leave the Elephant behind!  Ten and Haru fight back tears as they hurry across the bridge.  Kit reinforces the bridge with her ropes while Nikko and Kimi guide the donkeys across.  When George finally starts crossing however, Billy the Elephant begins to wail in fear as he realizes he is being left behind!  George tries to calm the elephant down, but over and over the poor loyal animal wails.  Twice, Billy tries to test the rope bridge despite all the others crying at him to stand back.  When the ropes snap against his weight, thankfully Billy the Elephant backs away and stands at the edge, alone as the world nears its end. The group sorrowfully continue on, hearing Billy's wailing echoing behind them as they walk in silence.

Then, a battle field.
Dead bodies.  Blood.  Torn armor.  The group moves carefully as they see signs of a recent battle.  Ahead, a small hut stands.  Very quickly, however, Kit realizes the hut is not a sanctuary but a monster!  Rushing forward, she uses her rope and light blades to hook up and clamber atop the construct!  The Mimic House turns to roar at the others and all quickly move to join the battle.  Kimi clambers atop the Mimic House as well, joining Kit while Ten and Haru combine their efforts to attempt a magical attack:  Ten summons dried leaves which Haru ignites with her firestarter kit.  Ten then blows the burning leaves at the hut to hurt it!  At one point, despite delivering deadly blows, Nikko is chomped by the Mimic House and thankfully, her armor holds.  But the thing continues to chew and it was only a matter of time before the light armor broke away.  As they fight, both Kit and Kimi spot the possible reason for the Mimic Hut to battle so savagely!  A younger baby Mimic Hut was cowering behind her mother.  And beyond them, a dead Mimic Hut was in pieces.  The two quickly surmise that the Mimic House was probably the mother and it was now trying to defend her child!  After a lot of arguments, the group eventually decides to try to let the thing leave peacefully.  And though wary, the Mimic House and its child finally hurry off to leave.

But time runs out.

The brilliant red sky shifts one final time and a black darkness sweeps across the clouds!  The group finally is shown that Aki is actually the Kuro-Ryuu herself and she apologizes to the adventurers that time has finally run out.  Unable to accept it is too late, Nikko demands that they do something to try and stop it.  Aki, however, tells them she only has enough power to send one more person to an ending... and is too weak to do any more.  She wanted to do this, at least, as a gift to the group for giving her one final tale to write.   When Kimi realizes the moon-stone was in his bag the whole time, the others are unsure if he or if Ten should go.  Haru reveals she had the Phoenix Feather Ten wanted to find but didn't admit it cause she wasn't sure when to do so.  Kimi however realizes that Ten could still drop off his final present to Kimi's loved one before giving his mother the cure.  Kimi hands Ten the moonstone and tells him to leave.  Ten hesitates.  The others all cheer him on, and before he can fully thank them, he is gone.

Haru sighs, sad that she will never know the reason the world has to end.  Nikko hates the fact he never made a difference.  Aki however explains to Nikko that it was thanks to her that all these others had one final adventure despite their fears and uncertainties.  That, in itself, was a difference in their lives unlike any other.  George mumbles that him defeating a vampire was pretty awesome.  The others agree, especially since they all just started being adventures a few days back.  Kimi admits he feels he's ready to say goodbye.  But Aki surprises them and tells them it is her who has to go. "The others have gone ahead of me.  Green, Blue, Red... the skies have shown us the others have ended their tales.  Now it is my time, and the best way to go it seems is to give you your final wish."  Kit stares back at her, realizing the Ryuujin is asking for the Hunter to use the Cursed Dagger one final time.  Kit admits she did not need to hunt her to kill her, but if that is what needs to be done, that is what she will do.

Kit Sune stabs the Cursed Dagger into Aki's chest, and Aki vanishes into a silent fading shadow.

And suddenly, in the darkness of the sky, a slice of light shines through, and from that ray, the whole world explodes with colors.

Back at Last Chance
Ten watches as his mother begins to heal from her sickness.  The brilliant light from outside tears into the room and manifests as a young child transcribing the story of what was coming to pass in the room into a tiny red book.  The heart-warming tale of a mother receiving the love of her son enveloped around the young child's writing and vanished.  Ten blinks a few times, uncertain of what just happened.

In the other room, Kimi's loved one desperately whispers to the moon stone for an answer.  She believed Kimi had died and the stone would allow them to communicate, but with no answer coming, she wondered if it meant he was still alive.  Somewhere out there.  And would eventually come home.  She could not see the green child inscribing into his own scroll her simple story of a lover waiting for another lover to return home.  Stories of everyday people, not adventurers, now having their own Ryuujin to scribe them.  To keep them.  To remember them.

It was a whole new world now.  One where even more Ryuujin existed: some for those seeking adventure!  And some for those who didn't.

Days Later
The group gathered at the tavern, summoned by the former queen. As they gathered, they quickly shared their stories.  Of seeing Billy excitedly still waiting for them across the chasm, doing small hops as they crossed back to let him hug them with his trunk.  Of the Rock Eater now a member of the guild setting up shop along the road.  Of a pair of houses that waved at them at the distance as they made their journey back home.  Haru shares her thoughts on what she thinks was the answer to the riddle, but admits they may never truly know for sure.

And there, at the tavern, they found themselves before a bald young boy who does not feel content to merely know all the stories of adventures done before.  "I want a chance to experience them."  And as the group smiled at this and realized a new adventure was just about to begin, none of them were aware of the four dragons that watched them from afar.  The four held their hands together and the Ryuujin wondered which of them will get a chance to write the first new adventure of this exciting new world.

There is No Ending.
This is a New Beginning.
